Subspecialty Care

Dry eye relief that lasts.

Chronic dry eye is more than an annoyance — it can affect vision quality and daily comfort.

Dry eye and tear film disorders are among the most common reasons patients visit Eye Consultants of Syracuse. Symptoms can include burning, irritation, fluctuating vision, redness, sensitivity to light, and the paradoxical feeling of excessive tearing.

What causes dry eye?

Dry eye can result from reduced tear production, poor tear quality, or rapid tear evaporation. Common contributors include age and hormonal changes, eyelid disease, extended screen time, contact lens wear, certain medications, and autoimmune conditions.

What is the best treatment for dry eye?

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. We may recommend:

  • Prescription drops to increase tear production or reduce inflammation
  • Punctal plugs (temporary or permanent) to preserve tears
  • Treatment of eyelid disease, including warm compresses and lid hygiene
  • Nutritional supplementation
  • Lifestyle and environmental adjustments

For some patients, specialty contact lenses designed for dry eye are part of the treatment plan.
